You walk out to the van on Monday morning, and the side door has been forced open. Drills gone. Saw gone. Testing equipment gone. Thousands of pounds of kit that you need for the job you are supposed to start in two hours. It happens to tradespeople across the UK every single day, and the question that follows is always the same. Does my tools stolen from van insurance actually pay out?

The answer depends entirely on what policy you have, what it covers, and whether you met the conditions.

Does Standard Van Insurance Cover Tool Theft?

Most standard commercial vehicle policies do not include cover for the contents of the van. Your van insurance covers the vehicle itself. Damage, fire, theft of the van. But the tools, equipment, and materials inside it? Separate cover entirely.

This catches out a huge number of tradespeople. They assume that because the van is insured, everything in it is too. It is not. You need a specific tools and equipment policy, or a tradesman insurance package that includes tools cover as part of the deal.

What Does Tools Cover Actually Include?

A dedicated tools and equipment policy typically covers theft, accidental damage, and sometimes loss. The specifics vary between insurers, but most policies cover your tools whether they are in the van, on site, or in a locked storage unit.

There are usually two options. An indemnity policy pays out the current market value of the tools, which accounts for wear and depreciation. A new-for-old policy pays the cost of replacing each item with a brand new equivalent. New-for-old costs more, but it means you are back to full working capacity without absorbing the difference between what your old drill was worth and what a new one costs.

Will It Pay Out if Tools Are Left in the Van Overnight?

This is where most claims get rejected. Nearly all tools cover policies have security conditions. The most common requirements are that the van must be locked, parked in a well-lit area or on a driveway, and ideally fitted with additional security like a slam lock, deadlock, or tool vault.

Some policies will not pay out at all if tools are left in the van overnight. Others will cover overnight theft but only if specific security measures are in place. Read the conditions before you need to make a claim, not after. The small print on overnight storage is the single most common reason for rejected tool theft claims.

Worth knowing. Fitting a tool vault or slam lock to your van can reduce your premium and strengthen your position if you do need to claim. Some insurers require them as a condition of cover. Others offer a discount for having them fitted.

How Much Tools Cover Do You Actually Need?

Add up the replacement cost of every tool, piece of equipment, and consumable you carry in the van on a typical working day. Most tradespeople underestimate this significantly. A plumber carrying a set of pipe cutters, a soldering kit, testing equipment, a drill, and a box of fittings can easily be looking at three to five thousand pounds of kit. An electrician with specialist testing equipment and diagnostic tools can be double that.

Underinsuring saves you a few pounds a month on the premium and costs you thousands when you claim. Get the figure right.

What Should You Do Immediately After a Theft?

Report it to the police and get a crime reference number. Do this the same day if possible. Your insurer will require it. Then contact your insurer or broker to start the claim. Take photos of any damage to the van, and if you have a list of what was in the vehicle, provide it with the claim.

Keeping a running inventory of what is in the van, with serial numbers and approximate values, makes the claims process significantly faster. Most people do not do this until after a theft, which makes it harder to prove exactly what was taken.

Getting the Right Cover in Place

If your current van policy does not include tools cover, or if you are not sure what the overnight conditions are, now is the time to check. A proper tradesman insurance package bundles public liability, tools cover, and employers’ liability together, so everything is in one policy rather than spread across three.

At Cotter Insurance, we search the market to find commercial insurance that fits what you actually do, not a generic package built for the average tradesperson. Tell us your trade and we will find cover that works. Our guide on what insurance does my business needs is a good starting point if you want to understand the full picture.
